No samples in Genesis/Mega Drive VGM export
« on: March 10, 2014, 01:29:20 pm »
Hi,

I love using DefleMask to compose tunes for the Genesis/Megadrive (seeing as it works natively on OS X), but whenever I export YM2612 tunes to VGM format and play them back with Audio Overload, I cannot hear any of the samples. I put this to the test by playing back other YM2612 VGM I downloaded from OC Remix on Audio Overload, such as from Revenge of Shinobi and Streets of Rage 2. My result is that I could hear the samples in those tracks, so that was not a problem. I thought it was just a problem with the FM5 channel, but throughout some other test tracks I made, I discovered that non-PCM instruments can indeed be processed through that channel through the DefleMask export; just not the PCM samples.

The Chipamp VGM plug-in in the extras is moot as I use OS X and not Windows (though I do have a dual booted partition though I hardly use it).

I just thought I would file this bug report.

DefleMask uses the latest VGM 1.60 sample playback capabilities, Audio Overload only supports 1.50 VGM files, so it can't play samples as the way DefleMask writes them.
Please use a more up to date VGM player or ask for the Audio Overload developers to update the program.

There is another thread asking the same thing:

Delek: After doing further testing, I can confirm that you are correct.

(The "Further Testing" was using Chipamp in my Windows partition)

EDIT: To be clearer, when I was using Chipamp in my Windows partition, I heard the samples, so Delek is spot on with his analysis.
