Bug Reports / Re: A few bugs (Genesis)

Thanks for the modules! I'm busy but working in DefleMask too. The point 1 and 2 are being addressed in the develop version of the tracker. Bug 3 is something happening for some time now and I can't seems to find where the bug is so far but I'm aware of it.
Bug 4 is new for me, will check this out.

but whenever it's time to add a new chip, I'll always vote for a sampler, preferably the SPC-700...

There could be debate about what sample-based system to include in Deflemask, especially since there are chips such as Seta's X1-010 and Capcom's Qsound module which both have twice the polyphony as the SPC700. Plus, trackers such as OpenMPT can already do all of those, with a huge polyphony in comparison.

As with OPL:

There's no reason to add OPL3. AdLib Tracker II is being actively developed and supports everything you could want it to and a bunch of things that most people probably don't even know about

I would agree on the FX, macros, etc.. Deflemask has systems that dedicated trackers already cover, such as VGM Music Maker (Genesis) and Famitracker (NES). Famitracker for example has what Deflemask does not have, particularly additional chips such as the Namco 163 and the Konami VRC6 and VRC7.

The YM2203 I can kind of understand since in practice, you could do faux-2203 tracks already by using 3 FM channels and 3 PSG
Almost, but not quite... The SMS PSG is missing a few features which the YM2203 SSG has, such as being able to go much lower in pitch and playing square and noise on the same channel at the same time...

But yeah I agree with you, I think they should fix what is already here before they add anything new, but whenever it's time to add a new chip, I'll always vote for a sampler, preferably the SPC-700...

Bug Reports / A few bugs (Genesis)

I haven't been around lately since Delek seems busy most of the time, but I figure I should probably report things anyway just in case.

1) The volume slider for PCM samples doesn't register the change if using the scroll wheel.

2) The macro bug I reported before is still there. Any PSG instrument that uses a macro will sometimes ignore the macro and play a loud sound instead for VGM exports.

3) Sometimes, VGM exports will loop incorrectly. The FM instrument on the last pattern will not switch back to the instrument used in the pattern being looped to.

4) It seems rarely, sometimes the PCM channel will randomly shut off for a section in VGM exports.

Its worth noting that these happen pretty commonly, except for 4, which happens rarely as far as I know. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to reproduce the problem in 3 and 4.
For problem 2, I have attached a Module and VGM export from a track I did, and removed everything except for the PSG channels that used a macro, so you can hear it easily. At 4 and 10 seconds into the VGM, you can hear the bug. This can happen to any PSG channel that uses a macro.

"we can include a set of instruments that replicate the instruments from the YM2413 and the Konami VRC7."
You can already do that though.

"I would prefer the OPL3 more,"
There's no reason to add OPL3. AdLib Tracker II is being actively developed and supports everything you could want it to and a bunch of things that most people probably don't even know about (using FX to manipulate ADSR/TL parameters on the fly, instrument macros, etc). All you'd do is add yet another system for DefleMask to support while the other systems are still in various states of functionality.

"and you can create OPL2/OPL1 tunes on there by using only nine of the system's channels,"
Not correct. OPL2 has less waveforms and no 4-op support, and OPL1 has only sine waves. You can't trim down the amount of tracks used and get OPL2 support.

"But we are not going to include these because we already have the Genesis system for that, making it redundant. "
The YM2203 I can kind of understand since in practice, you could do faux-2203 tracks already by using 3 FM channels and 3 PSG channels, but the 2608? That has a bunch of additional rhythm channels. That's not redundant to add.

If I could vote for none of these to be added (except maybe OPLL), I would. There already exist suitable trackers for every OPL chip, the only exception being OPL1 but I don't see why that chip should be added until after all the other chips in DefleMask are in a flawless state. OPLL is the only chip I'd want added right now since it would be nice to have FM support for the Master System, and SnevenTracker doesn't yet support it.

The attached files contain PCM samples from Sonic 3, and FM instruments from Sonic games.

Changed a couple of things like notes in this. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I'm still tinkering with it tbh.

Thanks Marc, if I switch to a non ssg-eg brass after the attack and then it works pretty well. The percussion sounds pretty good too though I couldn't make it work for this track.

There is this other method found in from Sylvester & Tweety (MD) that I can't quite figure out, which is different but sounds really good for brass:

You kind of get there by changing TL1 on the brass but not quite. Any ideas? I have a vague memory of using two different vibratos at once in VGM MM for a similar result, but it doesn't seem to work in DM.

Hi Alianger,

Yeah, can't really use DT2 effects on 2612. However, there is a nice handy little substitute that can work sometimes.

Using the SSG-EG in place of your DT2 usage can do the trick. It's not perfect, but it get's close to the Trumpet grunge, or that metallic clank of the percussion.

You can tune your SSG-EG effect by changing the Attack, Decay, MULT, or Rate Scale settings. I'd stick with SSG-EG settings 0 or 6 in your case.

See if the attached edits I made are satisfactory.
