[FM] Church Organ Patch / Demo
« on: October 08, 2017, 08:21:46 am »
This gave me some grief for a while, so I thought I'd share in case it helped anyone else.

Here's a little demo of the church organ I managed to put together, attempting to achieve a nice full church organ.
In this demo I'm playing a monophonic line, and this involves two octave layers plus a detuned echo. However, in my WIP cover of "The Corrupt" from Kingdom Hearts 2, I switched this up a bit for chords and found that it worked to have one channel do root note, then another channel do octave lower but delayed for echo effect, and then the last channel plays chord note.
This demo uses YM2151 but works in YM2612 as well - though on switching you'll want to the FMS slider down.

Sounds good, very similar to that SCIV track.

What about hammond organ, can you do that? :)

Mmmm, I think a Hammond organ's going to be a bit harder but I've been wanting that sound for a while too...

Yeah, sounds like a percussive organ, which is a fair bit easier because it's not very breathy (while a Hammond organ has that breathy sound that I find very hard to replicate in FM synthesis). I have some sort of percussive organ in my Chrono Trigger battle theme cover: http://www.deflemask.com/forum/show-off-your-work/cover-game-music-on-a-different-system/?action=dlattach;attach=2522

EDIT: Oh, and btw since you mentioned in chat not being able to view the link for my wip cover of The Corrupt... I've attached the DMF

Cool! I haven't heard the original but I think I would try a chord instrument (2 2op notes) for the horn and use channel 4 for more echo or a paired detuned channel for one of the higher organ harmonies. Or you could sample the horn and put it in sample channel 2, combining the drums into one channel but that's more work. It sounds very good as is though.

You know, I'm honestly clueless as to how to do 2op chords properly. I tried messing with the multipliers on the two sets for ALG 4, but I can't seem to get them to reproduce actual chords.

I've never made one from scratch myself, but what you can do is mess around with some pre-existing ones. What's annoying is that changing mult values for one of the notes only gives you certain chords, so you'll have to experiment with changing the other note as well, changing the tuning of the instrument compared to what you see in the tracker. Here, I'll upload some arcade ones that I have.

Just to explain my notes:
h=hard/harsh
ha/la=high/low attack rate
l fuzz=light fuzziness

I have some MD ones too if you want them, and some channel 3 mode intruments which don't appear as chords when loaded but can be used as such in channel 3 mode for MD specifically.
