PC-Engine Questions
« on: April 18, 2019, 03:23:59 am »
Hey there, name's Autumn. I have recently just realized part of my errors with using the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16 soundchip on Deflemask is my lack of knowledge of how it works. I would love to have as much help as possible with this, since I am planning on creating demakes and remakes of games on the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16.

So my main issues for now are basically just wanting to know more about the differences in the instrument options from the PC-Engine from the Game Boy which from what I have heard is the closest comparison for a start up. Also if someone knows the programming end of the PC-Engine in reference to the soundchips that would be helpful for me to know too.

Thanks

The instruments on the PC-Engine are much like that of the Gameboy, since both sound chips use waveform sound in some form. The PC-Engine has 6 voices, all of which do waveform sound, and channels 5 and 6 can be switched to "noise mode" where they output noise instead of regular wavy frequencies. I don't know anything about the programming side of either the Gameboy or the PC-Engine, but you could probably find help for that on a ROM hacking forum or something of that sort.
I upload all my Genesis creations to my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXjHLl8UfNQG_U-7EjFcwhQ

Also I like FM drums.

My question for the instruments now is mostly about if the GB instruments can be used for the PC-Engine or if I would have to recreate them in the chip. It's kinda me wondering since I want to use a lot of instruments that would be useful across both the GB and PC-Engine.

You can load up a DMW file made for the GameBoy's wavetable channel and use it for the PC Engine (since I actually did that in the past), but the wavetable instrument will sound quieter because both chips have different specifications for the wavetables. If I recall, the GameBoy's wavetable channel has a specification of 16x32 whereas the HuC6280 (PC Engine's soundchip) does 32x32 wavetables, so you'll need to modify the wavetable instrument to fit specification of the HuC6280.
Be sure that your headphones are on and the volume is set so you don't hurt your ears. Enjoy the music!
