Title: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: DevEd on April 27, 2014, 02:55:39 PM
So yeah, post any short loops/doodles/jingles you created.

I'll start with some sort of level clear jingle, and some random sound effects I created. (All are Game Boy)

Awesome. Demick12 recreated perfectly some sound effects from sonic (sonic warp sound and super sonic)

INSANE!!!!! THE BEST FM ALARM IN THE WORLD (the unique one too :P)

Decreasing the speed is the best way to a nice intro to a theme,

Speaking of sound effects...

Here's some sound effects from the Nintendo DS system menu... ON GAME BOY!!!!!1!1!!!!!!11!1111!!!!!!!!!11!!!!1!!!!1!

EDIT: While I'm on the subject of "one-thing-for-one-system-on-another-system-that-doesn't-belong-in-the-thread", here's one of the SMS demo modules, ported to Game Boy.

A short loop for some sort of cutscene. And a failed attempt at a creative name.

Double post. Please don't kill me :C

This thread seems to be completely devoid of Telefang. Let me fix that.

EDIT: Fixed a rather nasty bug that could cause a crash.

In one of my rare bursts of creative originality, I decided to compose a short loop for Game Boy that demonstrates three effects in 1 package: single-channel echo, using a square channel to back up the drums, and PWM. Although I did it mainly for the PWM.

Something really cool you can do with FM: make it sound like more than 5 channels are playing at a time (up to 10 different notes) with DAC on. Mine plays 9.

Only problem is that two notes have to be played simultaneously (seeing as one instrument can be split into up to 4 different pitches). However, cool jazz chords can be achieved this way.

Enjoy.  :)

Well, I finally found the courage to cover a song from Shantae.

(Specifically, this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyIK25DkTp0).)

OH CRAP DOUBLE POST I HOPE I DON'T GET REPORTED TO THE AUTHORITIES :o
...Ahem.
This isn't really meant to be any thing special, it's just to show that actual notes can play in the noise channel instead of constant percussion. It's on Game Boy, but a similar (yet more limited) effect can be done on NES. It would be neat to see it more often.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: DevEd on June 07, 2014, 12:49:15 PM
I hate to tell you this, but you're exploiting inaccurate noise emulation in Deflemask. Therefore, your song will only work in Deflemask. Try exporting it to a ROM and you'll see what I mean.

EDIT: Made a minor edit to my Shantae cover to correct one of the waveforms. Also, the wave channel is more audible now.

It's about time I posted something related to Telefang.

Here's an unfinished rendition of the Game Corner theme from Pokémon Gold/Silver, in Telefang style.

(Why does Windows have to make it so damn hard to type an accented é? I literally had to google "pokemon" and copy-paste the é!)

See if you can guess what game this is from.

EDIT: Also, here's an "ITEM GET" jingle. Shouldn't be too hard to guess which game it's from.

The first one is from Project S-11 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Of5hGJ3GNWI).

Also, might as well post some more sound effects I've been working on. (It's Game Boy, of course.)

Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: DevEd on July 20, 2014, 03:57:52 PM
Thanks.

Also, I just thought I'd mention that the Project S-11 song is unfinished. However, it is actually impossible to finish due to Deflemask's limitations. The original song uses the wave channel to play sampled audio (!), which requires a LARGE amount of waveforms, more than Deflemask actually supports (maximum amount of waveforms is 32).

DOUBLE POST OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Anyway, time to dump some random stuff I've been working on.

metroid2_itemget.dmf - A cover of the "ITEM GET" jingle from Metroid 2: Return of Samus.
itemget_metroid.dmf - My attempt to remix the "ITEM GET" jingle from Metroid in Konami style.
crystal_caverns_wip.dmf - An unfinished song from a game I'm working on.

Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: littlelamp100 on September 28, 2014, 06:43:02 PM
Holy crap, that's amazing! Haven't heard anything else like that, and it's a very interesting sound. Keep it up! ;)

I'm working on a pinball game (just the sound so far), and all of the sound for it comes from DefleMask. The main theme is going to go from system to system as you progress through the game, only leaving out the Game Boy and YMU759. All the sound effects are from the Genesis, though. 8)
Here's the main theme. :D
The only bug that I found is that FM 0 keeps getting muted in the Genesis version for some reason. ??? If someone could figure out why and/or fix it, that would be great.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: Delek on September 28, 2014, 11:15:48 PM
Hey very nice idea about having the same song in the game played in a different system. It gives the impression of "changing epochs" or something like that. It is surprisingly good. I could imagine it in the actual game, and having different backgrounds with C64/Genesis/SMS palletes and resolution could be another great adition.

Btw, in Genesis/PCE it is more noticeable, but that main theme has a super bass line.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: DevEd on October 02, 2014, 04:08:39 PM
I made some sort of shop theme. I was going to add a drum track, but then I realized it was better without one.

EDIT: I originally created this song as a shop theme, but I just now realized it could also be used as a level theme.

EDIT2: Also, have some drum beatz.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: Delek on October 02, 2014, 11:28:27 PM
I love that drum patternnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn HYPEE

Also that "square like" melody in the shop_theme is very smooth and sweet. Nice job

EDIT: now you have to mix this two songs: the shop_theme lacks drums and the drums lacks a shop_theme!!!!!!

Sorry for the late reply, I listen to all of your songs! here my comments:

bridge_zone, hey I wan't to recreate this type of style in my original music. Check out the melody, typical Japanese, sad/happy at the same time. It is like melancholic. Someone have a technic to achieve this?, a particular scale or only you have to be Japanese?
Like this one, please recreate it on NES, someone!!! <3

route_1, oooo, old memories playing pokemon back in the school! Is that your version?, it is more slow I think?, or my memory is failing maybe.
not_another_guess_this_song: Very saaaddd, :( I don't know from where it is. btw, you could use the goto command B00 instead of B01 to re-utilize the frame 0, because the end of the frame 2 it's the same as the beginning of frame 0. I'm right?
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: DevEd on October 12, 2014, 01:07:58 PM
bridge_zone - I don't really have a technique for that. Also, that song sounds like it's already NES.
route_1 - Actually, it's the version of the song from Pokémon Gold/Silver (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnCYN0z0EaY).
not_another_guess_this_song: It's from Warlocked (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5w8EkchYnw).

Also, I might as well post the finished version of my Crystal Caverns song.

Hey I forgot to say that your tune is very catchy. It is done in a very slow tempo however, you can always use the option "EXPAND" to add more details between notes if you want it in a future.

Yes. Yes, it is.

Also, on an unrelated note, I decided to do a cover of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv_VYdKzO3A).

And on an even more unrelated note, Alberto José González himself commented on that particular video!

Very sad tune!, it is prefect for a dungeon game; but a Tintin one?, damn, that's strange.

tintin_wip is pretty darn accurate, nice!

Hey I forgot to say that your tune is very catchy. It is done in a very slow tempo however, you can always use the option "EXPAND" to add more details between notes if you want it in a future.
No worries, I late reply anyway.  :P

I decided to re-create the WayForward splash screen jingle on Game Boy.
Attached is the original DMF, as well as a version optimized for hardware.

EDIT: The original can be heard here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLNCENH9aYw).

The Shantae labyrinth is nice. I like the wave channel and pattern 6. I've never really played Shantae so I don't really recognize the original, but I'm sure it's good.
The Wario Land cover seems very on the mark. It's been a few years since I played wl2, but the song seems almost perfect.
C64 song is alright. I would compare it to something, but I don't know anything to compare it to.

Heres a short and simple game boy track based on the main theme of Roppongi from SMT IV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqKWbj7mgmw

And now, some feedback:
Shantae: Y U NO PLAY SHANTAE? It's only $5 on 3DS Virtual Console. (If you don't live in US, then idk)
WL thingy: That particular song is not from Wario Land 2. It's from Wario Land 1.
roppongi: I have no idea what you were trying to accomplish with the noise channel, but it certainly isn't drums.

So, I have so much stuff to show off this time that I packed it all into a ZIP file. I'm calling it "Stuff Compilation #1" for some reason.

Here's some descriptions so you know what you're in for:
Game Boy/SMB_Overworld.dmf: Self-explanatory. Presented as a replacement for the current demo module.
Game Boy/SMB_Underground.dmf: Also self-explanatory. Also presented as a replacement for the current demo module.
Game Boy/smb_underground2.dmf: A cover of the underground theme from Super Mario Bros., done in my own style.
Game Boy/shop_theme.dmf: A fixed version of my shop theme. (Delek: DO NOT CHANGE THE DRUMS IF YOU INCLUDE IT IN THE DEMO MODULES!!!)
Game Boy/town_theme.dmf: A completely redone version of my town theme. Feel free to include it in the demo modules if you want.
NES/megaman.dmf: My own version of the classic robot master intro theme.
SMS/burning_town.dmf: A WIP cover of Burning Town (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEp6GFqSgDY) from Shantae.

Oh!, the cave one!, I forgot to comment about it.

Rather than a cave tune it appears like to be a haunted house track, that isn't bad actually, but if you want to give the impression of a cave I suggest you to add more power to the echoes and random sounds of drops or water flowing (maybe with the noise channel?) will do the job. I love the atmosphere that it will create, looking forward to the next version!

I experimented with adding water drips to the actual song, but I couldn't get much without interrupting the actual song. I think what I'm gonna do is add water drip sounds in-game. (Oh, and did I mention this is for a game I'm working on)

Surprisingly enough, one is not actually owed feedback on everything they make.
Your work is very high quality! But you cannot expect everyone to always have something to say about it. Especially when you've fixed something after a suggestion, like the cave theme. What is there to say except "sounds good" once all the notable issues have been ironed out? At some point one's thought on a song just becomes opinion.

I can understand frustration at posting stuff and not getting any sort of reply back and all. And if you want to stop posting because of that, that's up to you. But it's not like it's our fault for not having anything to say, or for not having the time to think up a reply to everything. You post a lot of tracks, it's sometimes a little hard to keep up.

For the sake of posting something along with this, have an unfinished NES composition I made while I was inspired yesterday. It's not very good or anything, but I might as well post something along with this.

A: I am probably the first reply you've gotten in a while. Yay!

B: The "water drops" are a nice touch (that is what's going on in the noise channel, right?). I would stagger them with the bassline so you have bass notes then water drops then back to bass notes, rinse repeat. This will let you hear both without drowning out each:

bass
bass
bass
bass
        drops
        drops
        drops
        drops
bass
...

C: I am sure if you work on the second part's ending a little more, it will come to you.

D: Nice Sonic 3 And Knuckles end of level jingle! Has always been my favorite Sonic game!

A quick demo to show how PSG slides faster than FM. Adjust your tracking accordingly!
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: Alianger on May 04, 2016, 10:13:30 AM
My quick SMB1 - Overworld (MD) edit, original by DevEd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRe30TR0Qqk
Changes:
-Triangle bass
-Minor bassline fixes including note cuts to avoid clicks and making the quickly repeated notes more pronounced.
-Higher octave FM squares at a low volume for a slightly thicker sound, with delays on the notes to avoid arpeggio with the actual PSG (I wasn't sure why that one is delayed, but I suppose it's more accurate?)

The snare could still be improved I think, but I don't know how to do it. I don't think the port's sound engine supports samples for even closer percussion accuracy.
Looking at the SMB MD port, maybe one of the PSG channels should also be switched to FM instead, since they use PSG for all sfx. We'll see what the devs say about that since the SFX could use FM instead.

Why not just do it like this?

Although, the only problem is, you can't cut notes with the ECxx effect past the speed setting like Famitracker can with its Gxx effect, so that triplet section here sounds wrong.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: Alianger on May 05, 2016, 11:35:50 AM
Well, I don't think that square sound is as accurate and the instrument seems less tweakable in terms of the decay and timbre? I added note delays because I assumed it's more accurate to the original since DevEd did it with his PSG lead instrument.
But yes, switching to FM for one or two channels is an option as I said; it depends on what they say about it if they're even interested in doing this.

marcb0t has helped me get a more accurate triangle bass and I just now did a couple of minor tweaks to the FM squares. I think I'm sticking with this version for now.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: Raijin on May 05, 2016, 06:06:31 PM
Well, it might not sound great with Deflemask's current interpolation issue, so I would suggest waiting til it's fixed honestly. That square patch is the bare minimum needed to make a square wave. It's just using 2 Operators.

That "Triangle" though is much less accurate than before. Now it's simply a sine wave with an overtone. What you had before was much better imo.
Title: Re: Share your short loops/doodles/jingles
Post by: Alianger on May 05, 2016, 07:08:33 PM
Yeah I'm holding off on getting the most recent version for a bit partly because of that, but the square I had isn't that bad is it? Yours sounds like the one in DecapAttack though which is cool.
Maybe I'm just splitting hairs, I don't think anyone not into making chiptunes would notice the difference without comparing these and the NES original side by side.

I also thought the triangle bass I had was quite good when comparing to a youtube upload, maybe a bit lacking in depth, but I assumed he knew what he was talking about lol. I think his is good too, but not as "bright" sounding.

That "Triangle" though is much less accurate than before. Now it's simply a sine wave with an overtone. What you had before was much better imo.
I must concede, that you are right. After comparing the "triangle" sound I made with a real NES triangle wave it is not very accurate. :(

Alianger's actually is a lot closer. I tried tweaking it again, and got pretty close. But I gave up, knowing that it's a waste of time. Because you guys are close enough, and there's only so close we can get. The fidelity of the FM is just too high, and will never match an NES triangle wave "spot on" with a Genesis/Megadrive...

Unless... you are able to hack a 14-bit direct wave table write to the DAC channel... which is possible, but complex. Even then, it might be a little off because of the higher fidelity. Though that would probably be the most legitimate reproduction, even more so than a sample.

Never assume I know what I'm talking about. :P  That is a very dangerous past time. I'm wrong about all kinds of things. But that's also one of my best methods of learning thus far.

I agree that people who are not into chiptune production will likely not even notice the difference. Most don't even understand why saying "8-bit music" is really a very vague and useless terminology. 8-bit can mean many different things. People generally mean NES or Gameboy. (Even though we know there are many other chipsets out there, the layman does not care enough to distinguish).

I should've double checked, but you are mostly right when it comes to chiptune sound design :)

By coincidence, I just found a bunch of nes style conversions of some Shin Megami Tensei (I think) music when browsing X68K music folders. They're not perfect, but not bad either.

Hehe, I appreciate your vote of confidence. I don't really spend as much time on music as I used to.
And I still got things to learn. One lesson is to always compare the live source sound when trying to match it in a different chipset. That's like me forgetting to put gas in the car and wondering why it won't start. :P

I'd be interested in checking out some of those X68K  NES conversions, if you could link me some of that.

First piece I'm sharing with the forum, bit of a sound test. Seeing how well DefleMask's Global Play feature works when using two different chipsets. Calling this one a successful test.

Arcade (YM2151) and NES.

It's a great feature, I'm so glad DefleMask has it! I was worried that the two chips might desync over time, but it seems NES and Arcade YM2151 play nice together. :>

Here is an unfinished cover of The Trees by Rush. It's such a beautiful song and the middle section would sound lovely on the Genesis, but I may or may not continue working on this cover because of its sheer length.

I made a little, video game-y song called Just Straight Doodlin' where I challenged myself to use as little PSG as I could (excluding that sweet Noise channel for the hihats) and still maintain a fuller sound. Listening to this now, it kind of reminds me of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I's music, but with less meow synths. For the final released version, go to my Newgrounds page (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/695344)!

Eventually, I want to delve into programming my own FM patches because, for as much as I like using presets, I want to make my own sounds and understand frequency-modulation synthesis more.

Here is an early WIP of SOR1 Fighting In The Street for the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16.  This is literally the first musical thing I've done since middle school band class lol.  Keep in mind, I also had zero experience or knowledge of trackers until about a few days ago.  That being said, I think this is coming along pretty well.  :)

Trying to get the hang of combining waveforms + instruments to get the sounds I want.  I even tried to get a little fancy with some volume sliding and vibrato effects in here too.

Just a random jingle I made a while back for all the systems (except for the Arcade and NES) that I like to call "A Company Logo." You picture a logo sliding or fading into view and a shine goes across it (a "ding!" plays when that happens). The Genesis and PC Engine versions have a different intro compared the rest, but they still end with the "ding!" sound. Because the forum only allows 4 files per post, the PC Engine and Genesis "A Company Logo" jingles are in the following post.

I was taking a break from making music over the past week, but I decided to make some sketches so I can get back into music making. These two sketches were made today. "ShortSketch2" is a Genesis tune that comes in two versions; one with FM drums+PSG noise and one with a sampled drum loop in FM channel 6. I also experimented with effect commands 12xx and 14xx to change the TL values of operators 1 and 3 of "WGFMPluck2" on the fly, and I came up with very nice results with this short tune. "ShortSketch3" is a short and somewhat happy PCE tune.
